Bend It Like Beckham

Plot/Screenplay

The story is very a very simple one about an Indian girl living in England who is following her dream of wanting to play soccer. However her problems are quite complex because of her cultural background and gender. Both of these issues are equally complex, nevertheless the film in able to project them in a lighthearted and comical way.

Acting

Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley play their roles beautifully in this film. As you watch the film you get to know these characters to the point where you can relate to their problems and experiences. The many characters of Jess’s family are also well developed and greatly contributed to the spirit of the film very similarly to “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”.

Cinematography/Effects

Although there is nothing visually spectacular about this film it does employ some well-done montages and action sequences from the soccer games. My biggest gripe is the lack of transitions and generic settings for the movie. We get no sense of the town where Jess lives or the locations she visits as the film seamlessly jumps from her house, to the park to the stadium.

Appeal

The film deals with issues that some individuals may perceive to be too effeminate for their tastes. This is also a foreign film with the characters speaking with an English accent, using British humor, and dealing with a somewhat unfamiliar sport of soccer. However, if you overlook these issues, the film is truly a delightful experience that can be appreciated by all ages.
