Review ] [ Plot/Screenplay “Damn yo, I got a case of the munchies!” Yes, this is another stoner/teen comedy to hit the movie screens this summer. Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) are two roommates who like to smoke it up. This is naturally followed up by a major hunger attack which nothing can satisfy except for a horde of White Castle mini burgers. Along the way the pair gets side-tracked and meet two hotties at Princeton University. However the girls seem to have a passion for passing gas and with the campus security hot on their trail Harold and Kumar continue their wild adventure as they run into a rabid raccoon, Doogie Howser, a racist cop, and am I forgetting anything else? Oh yeah, a cheetah! Acting While this movie is definitely not the first, and not the last, in the stoner comedy genre, it does poses a unique quality - the fact that Harold and Kumar are Chinese and Indian Americans respectively. The movie takes advantage of the nationality stereotypes as Harold’s boss mentions “Yeah, those Asians just love to crunch numbers,” while Kumar gets mocked because of his Indian accent with the infamous phrase “Thank you, come again.” There is also a different level of intelligence as opposed to other stoner films, where the characters are typically a pair of unemployed bums; where Harold works in an investment banking firm, while Kumar is studying to be a surgeon. John Cho and Kal Penn have a good chemistry together on screen. Cho plays a rational “do it by the book” character and Penn is his wild and crazy partner. Cinematography/Effects As would be expected this teen comedy has its share of bare cleavage, toilet humor, and crazy animal stunts. The material is not that extreme or offensive yet it is fresh and definitely funny. The inclusion of a small role for Neil Patrick Harris (the former "Doogie Howser") was a welcomed surprise as well as the appearance of Christopher Meloni who plays a nasty looking tow-truck owner who asks the boys to have their way with his beautiful wife. While the scene where Harold and Kumar ride a cheetah may have been the most unexpected, the funniest one would have to be Kumar’s wild hallucination about being married to a large bag of marijuana. Appeal Although Harold and Kumar may not become a cult classic like Cheech and Chong, this movie does put a fresh new twist on the genre by introducing the foreign nationality element. During their adventure Harold and Kumar grow up and learn how do deal with their stereotypes and well as their personal problems. Although the entire scenario is very far fetched and highly unrealistic it is quite inspiring. When I walked out of the theater I was ready for my own trip to White Castle. Score "Sunny and Bright" – Should See This
