The eagerly anticipated third and final installment of the Matrix saga opens right where Matrix Reloaded left off with Neo, played by Keanu Reeves trapped between Zion and the Matrix world. Once freed, Neo goes to see the Oracle one more time where he is informed that there will be a final showdown by the end of the day, which will decide the fate of the world. The final battle rages on two fronts with the humans fighting the machines trying to save Zion and Neo fighting Agent Smith and his army of clones. Overall, the story in simple to follow but hard to understand as we try to figure out why certain things happen and how they will affect the final outcome.

Like most sequels, Matrix Revolutions looses the charm of the original. The characters are less interesting than they originally appeared partly because none of them grow psychologically or emotionally from the first film. Neo is still clueless as ever, Trinity played by Carrie-Anne Moss is still madly in love with Neo, and Morpheus played by Laurence Fishburne still undoubtedly believes in “The One.” The secondary characters are also dull because of a lack of development and their two-dimensional personality. Lastly, the dialogue is simply awkward with questions being answered by more questions, which left the actors as well as the audience utterly confused.

Visually, this movie is quite impressive with stunning computer generated graphics and special effects. Although the effects are not as ground breaking as in the original, they are larger, faster and intricately more complex. The two scenes that stand out are the sprawling swarm of mechanical spiders that attack Zion and the final showdown between Neo and Agent Smith. Both scenes are remarkable in terms length and scale as things continuously zoom across the screen for almost 15-20 minute.

Being the third and final episode in the Matrix series, one would naturally expect for everything to be wrapped up and settled, however most viewers including die hard fans will probably not be satisfied with how the Wachowski brothers decided to end the series. While being impressed by the special effects of the battle sequences one cannot help to feel empty by the ambiguous ending. In the end, we are left with more questions than we had at the beginning leading us to believe that there must be a 4th movie in the works that will finally explain it all. Although most would disagree, personally I would not be surprised if we saw Matrix 4 in the near future.
